Critical Firmware Upgrade Required for Certain HPE SAS Solid State Drive Models

HPE released a critical support notice today related to SAS SSD drives in many of their products. It seems that there is a major firmware issue on these drives that the manufacturer has found. After 32,768 hours, or just about 3 ¾ years, the drives spontaneously fail. The data cannot be recovered, and you need to go back to backups to restore. What is especially dangerous about this bug is that it affects all drives at about the same exact time. Chances are servers or storage with these drives were bought and deployed at about the same time and will fail in quick succession. The good news is there is a simple fix as a firmware update is available. This can be applied using iLO on HPE servers non-disruptively. The customer support notice can be found here. This should be resolved as soon as possible - SnowCap representatives are able to provide assistance as needed.
